Mobile Learning Environments

Schools recognize that potential situations for learning arise constantly during the school day … anywhere, anytime.
The immediate availability of appropriate ICT resources to students is critical in many schools and the advent of “one-device-per-student” and campus-wide wireless (WiFi) hotspots are now a reality.
Where one-device-per-student is not possible, innovative schools have adopted mobile computer labs utilizing so-called “COW” solutions. Netbooks and Notebooks are charged, stored, secured and transported in specially designed trolleys. The trolleys usually have a WiFi Access Point (AP) which provide students with school network and Internet connections and are thus, a potent tool for learning in any learning space in the school.
“We love our Netbooks! The students are very comfortable with their size and portability.” Anne Malcolm, Principal, Ponsonby Primary School.
It is important that schools consider the practicalities of mobile computer labs and bear in mind the importance of Netbook / Notebook battery life, the size and weight of devices (small is good!) and the importance of robust and fast WiFi APs and network infrastructure.
A 3 year warranty period for Netbooks and Notebooks is also important, particularly if equipment is leased… in fact this may well be a pre-requisite of leasing companies.
